Ten Most Popular Cars in the UK Revealed

UK based price comparison website moneysupermarket.com has revealed a list of the top ten most popular cars in its native country. This has been determined by looking at the number of car insurance searches which have been conducted on their website for each different make of vehicle which is available in the country.

This has revealed that the Vauxhall Corsa is actually the most popular with British motorists, as smaller vehicles featured prominently on the list. Moneysupermarket.com’s Peter Harrison believes that this is due to the recent increases in the cost of fuel and insurance, which are forcing British motorists to opt for vehicles which are cheaper to run: “We’ve seen rising fuel prices and escalating car insurance premiums over the past year, so it’s no surprise motorists are taking steps to combat these costs; age, engine size and make or model of car all have an impact on the cost of insurance premiums, and fuel consumption too.”

American vehicles still featured strongly on the list, with the Ford Fiesta giving the courses a fight for the overall honors but eventually fitting into 2nd place on the list.

The top ten most popular vehicles in the UK are as follows:

10. Honda Civic

Despite the popularity of Japanese cars in other parts of the world, the Civic is remarkably the most popular Japanese vehicle in the UK.  This is a rare victory for Honda over its big rivals over at Toyota.

9. Volkswagen Polo

9th place will actually be a disappointing result for Volkswagen with its Polo model given the popularity of Ford and Opel’s smaller vehicle offerings.

8. Fiat Punto

The top Italian built vehicle on the list is the Punto, which again confirms the popularity of smaller vehicles in the UK. Fiat has reinvented its vehicle range in recent years to combat the stronger competition, with much improved exterior styling and reliability.

7. Peugeot 206

Peugeot actually stopped manufacturing the 206 in 2010, with it now being superseded by the 207 which has been in production since 2007. This is already in the top 50 list of most popular UK cars despite its relatively young age, which bodes well for the future.

6. Renault Clio

The Clio is a very popular vehicle in Europe thanks to its legendary French styling which has helped it remain popular in Europe. However, it has become even more popular in recent years due to its small size which has made it more attractive in the eyes of cash strapped British motorists.

5. Volkswagen Golf

The fact that the Golf is ahead of its little sister the Polo despite the general trend of smaller vehicle being more popular than the larger vehicles produced by the parent brand speaks volumes for the relative performance of both vehicles.

4. Ford Focus

The first American entrant in the top ten, the mark two version of the model was largely panned by British motoring critics for being too conservative. However, the new model has been warmly received thanks to its superior external appearance and improved fuel efficiency. This should help it move up the list in the coming years.

3. Vauxhall Astra

The Astra beating the Focus to third place will be a massive disappointment for Ford. However, the promising initial reaction to the latest Focus suggests that this problem will be addressed in the years ahead.

2. Ford Fiesta

Proving that small cars are now favoured by British motorists, the Fiesta had over 200,000 more car insurance searches than the Focus over the course of 2010. This has been helped by the latest mark 7 Fiesta which has had promising sales since its introduction in 2008, helping it achieve the title of best selling new car in the UK in 2010.

1. Vauxhall Corsa

The Corsa was the only car to surpass the one million car insurance searches mark, with the models popularity with younger motorists believed to be the primary reason behind its triumph. This is due to its low initial purchase cost and cheap running costs.
